- If you want a free Lightroom alternative in the form of a photo editor for Mac, then Apple Photos is a solid choice. This photo editing software comes bundled with Mac computers and offers a lot of control over photo editing. It can handle exposure, contrast, white balance, highlights, shadows, colors, and more with ease.
- Apple Aperture and Lightroom pioneered combining image management with image processing. Apple’s Photos, plus it doesn’t do the latter (keep exported photos in order and preceded by sequential numbers). Thanks for any suggestions. March 6, 2019 at 4:22 am. Hi Kay, I too am looking for an alternative to Lightroom.
- And Apple Photos is insanely fast! Far faster than Lightroom Classic, and I believe Apple Photos is even faster than Adobe Lightroom CC (the new one for Desktop). 2.Easy to favorite and pick photos When looking through photos, I just press the little heart (favorite/pick) icon in the MacBook Pro Touch Bar, and it is a joy to use!

Apple Photos Vs Lightroom Preset

I have been asked variations on the question, “Should I use Lightroom or iPhoto for organizing and editing images?” numerous times. Comparing the two is a little like comparing a go-cart to a modern car. Both are a means of transportation and will ultimately get you there, but the car (Lightroom) has a lot more features and with the proper training can achieve superior results in less time.
Like Apple Photos, Microsoft Windows 10 Photos is also a built-in app for viewing and sorting images. The performance and workflow of this Microsoft built-in app is similar to Apple Photos. With it, you can view images and organize photos. Also, you can do basic editing tasks like cropping and resizing with Microsoft Photos. Also, thanks to iOS13, iPad users are now able to import photos direct to Lightroom Mobile from their camera, bypassing the Camera Roll. (Remember that to be able to import RAW files, you need to be a Lightroom subscriber.) To save confusion, I’ve outlined all the ways to import files into Lightroom Mobile below (click to expand).
Organization
Both Lightroom and iPhoto have varying methods for viewing your images whether it is chronologically, in collections, folders etc. You can sort by the camera you used, or by the metadata in the images in both pieces of software. From an archiving perspective, Lightroom does not store the images in the Lightroom Catalog. iPhoto stores everything in it’s catalog in one file. Yes, you can dig around and get the images out, or export them, but this is the main thing I don’t like about iPhoto. Lightroom has all the benefits of a beautiful piece of software to view your images, while still having your photos organized in visible easy to access folders on your hard drive, or external hard drive.

I would like to think Lightroom will be around forever. But, even if it isn’t, all of my photos will still be accessible and I can know exactly where they are because they are organized with Lightroom, but remain in an easy to navigate folder structure independent of it. Whereas in iPhoto, the actual images are hidden and it’s not the easiest to find the original files.
Robust Editing Tools and History Panel
Lightroom has state of the art tools for editing your photos. It is the industry standard when it comes to this. Many people think they need to get Photoshop to adjust their images but usually, this isn’t the case. Most adjustments and edits can be made in Lightroom. Photoshop is more complicated and is better for compositing images together and very precise and detailed retouching. Photoshop is not necessary for basic image editing.

In iPhoto, a lot seems to happen “behind the scenes.” Lightroom has a History Panel and you can go back to any adjustment you made on an image from today, or weeks ago, and undo to a specific step or start over. Lightroom’s tools are also ultimately finer tuned. Especially for those shooting RAW files with their digital cameras, Lightroom is the clear choice because you can’t take full advantage of what RAW offers in iPhoto.
Speed
Lightroom has many tools to Sync adjustments between multiple images and the ability to make presets for importing and exporting that can save photographers hours of time. You can copy and paste adjustments in iPhoto, but in Lightroom you can choose exactly which of the adjustments you want to copy and paste. For example, you may want to apply all of the settings from one image to a group of images, but you don’t want to apply the same crop to them all. In Lightroom, that is no problem, a simple check box allows you to do just that. You can easily sync all or just some of the settings on one image to multiple images.

Quantity
iPhoto libraries can be slow to load with lots of images. Lightroom works very well with tens of thousands of images in a Catalog.

Remove Red Eye, Healing Tool, etc.
Lightroom Version 5 has an amazing healing tool with a great amount of control. I find that I am going into Photoshop less and less and am able to achieve most of what I want to do without ever leaving Lightroom. iPhoto has some similar tools and they work well most of the time, but they do not offer the same control. In iPhoto some of the adjustment tools allow you a bit of control but don’t really tell you what exactly is going on. In Lightroom you can fine-tune exactly what you are adjusting. You can always go back later and adjust or change portions of an image in Lightroom without starting from scratch.

Photoshop Companion
If you find that you do indeed need to use Photoshop, Lightroom is the perfect companion. If you are using Adobe Bridge to view your images, you will love how easy it is to view and edit your images in Lightroom and then easily export them to Photoshop. This is not the case for iPhoto.

Import Directly from iPhone

Blurb Book Integration
Lightroom has a powerful Blurb Book creation tool built right in (which I’ve written about on the blog). iPhoto allows you to create similar books through Apple’s book service, but Blurb has many more options to choose from and the paper quality is far superior.

So which will it be…
With the proper training, I am confident that Lightroom is the better choice because of the control it gives you. What you learn in Lightroom can help you become a better photographer because you can see exactly what you are adjusting. You can start to see patterns if you are consistently adjusting something in all of your images, and you can then change the way you are photographing or a particular setting on your camera. Or if you want to continue photographing the same way, you can create a preset to be applied on import to get you to a good starting point.

While there is a learning curve with using Lightroom, I am confident it will pay off with better results and more control of your images.
